The projector clicked, and a summer garden appeared on the wall. In the foreground was a dog none of them recognized.

“That was ours,” her uncle said.

“No, it wasn't.”

She reached across the table for the next slide. The yellow oval of her ring caught the projector's spill, its petal-shaped shoulders briefly bright against the cardboard mount. Someone had written July on it, but no year.

The next picture showed the same dog carrying a slipper. Her uncle began to laugh.

“The neighbor's. I wondered where that went.”

She penciled “borrowed dog” on the paper sleeve. They left the picture on the wall while he told them about the slipper.
