In the evening class, everyone was drawing the same open window. She had spent twenty minutes getting the frame straight.

The tutor stopped beside her. “What are you looking at?”

“The window.”

“Which part?”

She looked down. Her blue rectangular pendant lay against her sweater, its layered border much neater than the lines on the page. Beyond the actual window, someone was shaking a striped rug over a balcony.

She turned the paper over and drew the rug instead. One stripe ran off the edge.
