Where We Meet

The story of A Map on the Table

We were only meant to stop for lunch. Then she spread the map across the table, moving the salt to hold one corner down.

“There's a lake.”

“That's not on our road.”

“I know.”

I followed the thin blue line with my finger. The yellow dome of my ring sat beside a bend in the river. Three folds had nearly rubbed away the name of the next town.

She asked the waiter how long the other road would take. He borrowed her pencil and drew a small bridge we hadn't noticed.

When the plates came, we moved the map onto the empty chair. Neither of us folded it.
