Where We Meet

The story of The Seat Beside Mine

There was one dry seat left on the ferry. I put my bag on my knees before the woman with the paper parcel had to ask.

She sat down carefully. Something inside the parcel rattled.

“A lamp,” she said. “At least it was when I bought it.”

I pinned my ticket to my knee with one finger. The blue rectangle of my ring lay beside a bent corner of the paper. She tucked her own ticket beneath the parcel's string.

Halfway across, the parcel rattled again. This time we both looked at it.

At the landing, she lifted one end toward me. I took it, and together we carried it up the ramp.
