What We Keep

The story of Side Two

She knew the first side of the record better than the second. Years ago, the neighbor downstairs had worked early shifts; one side was usually all they played.

Now the flat was quiet. She drew the record from its sleeve, keeping her fingers on the edge. The red-brown oval of her ring appeared beside a label faded almost to pink.

Her brother looked up from the sofa.

“Turn it over.”

“I was going to.”

The first song on side two began with a cough neither of them remembered. Then came a guitar, very close. He stopped sorting the sleeves. She sat on the arm of the sofa, leaving the empty cover open on her knees.

Another chapter.
