She reached past him. The smooth aqua oval of her pendant tipped toward the glass, catching a pale reflection from the empty street. Inside, the chairs were still upside down on the tables.

“First customer,” he said.

“Door staff, apparently.”

He laughed and set down the trays. While he found a paper bag, she put two chairs on the floor. He put down two more.

Outside, a bus slowed at the corner. Neither of them looked up until the bell over the door rang again.
