Where We Meet

The story of A Place at the Table

The table was set for six. She arrived with two more people and a bag of oranges. Someone went downstairs to borrow chairs. Someone shifted the tablecloth.

She peeled an orange in one long strip. The peel curled across her finger, echoing the curves around the ring’s yellow oval.

“Another chair?” someone asked.

“The bench.”

By the time they sat down, the peel lay in a loose spiral among the plates. Her place was between two people she had never met. One passed her the bread; the other held out an orange.

Another chapter.
