What We Keep

The story of The Letter I Kept

She found the letter between two pages of a book she had almost given away. No envelope, no address. Just her own handwriting, smaller than she remembered. Outside, someone was carrying flowers home in the rain. She read the first line and remembered the room where she had written it: the open drawer, the cold tea, all the things she had not yet learned to say. This time, she did not finish reading. She folded the paper along its old crease and slipped it back. Not every letter needs to reach another person. Sometimes it is enough to know that, once, you found the words. The violet stayed with her long after she closed the book.
